Wells of Life Featured on CBS Sports!

Wells of Life featured on the Hometown Heroes segment of CBS 2 Sports Central last Sunday after the NFL game!

October/2022

In Mayirye, Uganda a water well brings a community of 1270 people together. This well is a living memorial of Kobe & Gianna Bryant, and provides clean water as a tribute to the humanitarian lives the Bryant’s led. Kobe and Vanessa Bryant were married in 2001 at a Southern California Catholic parish and raised their four children in the Catholic Church as frequent parishioners at Our Lady Queen of Angels in Newport Beach.

A celebration of life was held at the well to pay tribute to Kobe & Gianna Bryant. The village members sported Lakers shirts and decorated the well in purple and yellow. The celebration was complete with singing, dancing, and prayer lead by Advisory Board Member Father Max Ssekiwala. In addition, the Gianna Bryant Education Scholarship was presented to Isabel Noelin (pictured below in the red dress). The scholarship was funded by Nick & Michelle Jordan to provide all funds associated with schooling for Isabel at the St. Theresa Bethany Primary School. Her dream is to become a doctor and work at the Medical Center in the Mayirye Village.

The idea for honoring Kobe and Gianna was conceived by supporters of the Orange Catholic Foundation and Wells of Life. When the well was installed in October 2020, the village was provided with clean water for the first time in its 58-year history. “Water grants a future for our children,” said a primary school teacher. The well not only provides water, it provides time and education. Children no longer spend their days walking dangerous stretches of land to fetch filthy water from a pond. This well has provided an opportunity for them to attend school instead, receive an education, and enjoy the simplicity of childhood.
